"We need to anchor nutrition at the agriculture table. It's part and parcel of agriculture."

- Charlotte Dufour, food security, nutrition and livelihoods officer at FAO

Last month, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)  partnered with A4NH and IFPRI to jointly host a training workshop at the IFAD headquarters in Rome on how to design nutrition-sensitive agricultural projects.

The goal of the four-day training was to establish a dedicated cadre of practitioners from various disciplines equipped to design, implement, and monitor agricultural and rural development projects from a nutrition-sensitive perspective. The workshop was also an opportunity to engage and align on this issue with key partners, such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Bank, and REACH, towards a more coordinated global nutrition agenda.

A4NH  nutrition advisor, James Garrett, who is posted to IFAD supporting their development of a nutrition strategy, urged participants to consider the complex impact pathways for improving nutrition throughout the agricultural development process, from production through consumption, from field to plate.

With such diverse participants—from agronomists and nutritionists, to economists and agricultural investment planners—the workshop helped bridge the gap between disciplines and cultivate a pool of experts who can contribute to ending hunger and malnutrition among the poorest and most vulnerable communities.
